Variable-Speed Pool Pumps: Are they Worth the Upgrade?

Variable-speed pump

Your pool pump is one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment in your pool system. Running for hours every day, it keeps water circulating through your filter, chlorinator and other connected equipment.

But if you're still using a traditional single-speed pump, you could be using more electricity than necessary.

Modern variable-speed pool pumps offer quieter operation, greater control and the potential to significantly reduce running costs.

The good news? You don't always need to replace your existing pump to enjoy some of these benefits.

Let's look at your options and whether upgrading is worth the investment.

What's the Difference Between Single-Speed and Variable-Speed Pumps?

A traditional single-speed pool pump generally operates at one fixed speed whenever it's switched on.

That means it uses the same motor speed whether you're carrying out everyday filtration or need additional water flow for cleaning and other equipment.

A variable-speed pump allows you to adjust the motor speed to suit the job.

For example:

  • Lower speeds: Everyday filtration and water circulation.

  • Medium speeds: Additional circulation when required.

  • Higher speeds: Vacuuming, priming or operating equipment that needs high water flow.

The biggest advantage is that your pump doesn't always need to run at full speed.

Can Variable-Speed Pumps Really Save Electricity?

Yes, and potentially quite a lot.

Pool pumps typically use considerably less electricity when operating at reduced speeds. Because the relationship between pump speed and energy consumption isn't linear, even a relatively modest speed reduction can produce worthwhile savings.

However, the actual savings depend on your pump, pool plumbing, operating speed and daily running time.

For example, a pump drawing 1,000 watts for eight hours consumes 8kWh per day.

If a variable-speed setup could deliver adequate filtration while averaging 300 watts over ten hours, consumption would fall to 3kWh per day.

That's a reduction of 5kWh per day, or approximately $1.50 at an assumed electricity rate of 30 cents per kWh.

That's around $547 per year in this illustrative example.

Actual results will vary, and the pump must still provide sufficient circulation for your pool equipment.

Three Ways to Improve Your Pool Pump Setup

Before spending money on a new pump, consider the condition of your existing equipment and what you're trying to achieve.

Option 1: Keep Your Existing Pump and Add Variable-Speed Control

If your existing single-speed pool pump is working well, replacing the entire unit may not be necessary.

The Madimack Inverter Plus is an external controller that allows compatible single-speed pool pumps to operate at adjustable speeds.

It offers:

  • Adjustable motor speed from 1,200 to 2,900 RPM

  • Up to four programmable daily operating periods

  • Real-time power consumption monitoring

  • Potential reductions in electricity consumption and operating noise

  • The ability to retain your existing compatible pump

It's an attractive option for pool owners wanting to improve efficiency without the expense of replacing a perfectly good pump.

Important: The Inverter Plus isn't compatible with every pump. Your existing motor must meet specific electrical and motor-type requirements.

The range has also been discontinued by Madimack, with limited remaining stock available through Aus Pool Supplies.

Option 2: Replace Your Pump with an Affordable Variable-Speed Model

If your existing pump is ageing, becoming noisy or approaching the end of its service life, replacing it with a variable-speed model may be the better long-term solution.

The Madimack InverFLOW ECO offers an affordable entry into variable-speed pump technology.

Featuring an energy-efficient DC brushless motor and Madimack's inverter technology, it provides adjustable pump output, quieter operation and improved control over everyday filtration.

Available in 1.0HP and 1.5HP models, the ECO range is well suited to homeowners wanting a complete variable-speed pump without moving into the premium price bracket.

The InverFLOW ECO is also a discontinued range, available while remaining stock lasts.

Option 3: Upgrade to a Premium Inverter Pool Pump

Madimack InverFLOW Plus – from $1,149

For pool owners looking for more advanced features, the Madimack InverFLOW Plus offers a higher-specification solution.

Along with energy-efficient variable-speed operation, the InverFLOW Plus includes:

  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity

  • Smartphone app control

  • Programmable running schedules

  • Quiet everyday operation

  • Dedicated Skimmer Mode

  • Multiple pump sizes to suit different pool requirements

It's particularly appealing if you're replacing an older pump and want greater control over how your pool operates.

Which Option Is Right for Your Pool?

There's no single answer for every pool.

If your existing single-speed pump is reliable and compatible, an external inverter controller may be the most economical way to improve its operation.

If your pump is nearing replacement, an affordable variable-speed model like the InverFLOW ECO could be a sensible upgrade.

And if you want more advanced controls, connectivity and flexibility, a premium inverter pump such as the InverFLOW Plus may justify the additional investment.

The cheapest option upfront isn't always the cheapest over the life of the equipment.

Consider the purchase price, expected electricity savings, pump condition, warranty, maintenance and how long you expect to keep the system.

Is a Variable-Speed Pump Worth the Upgrade?

For many Australian pool owners, the answer is yes — particularly if you're operating an older single-speed pump for extended periods each day.

Lower electricity consumption, quieter operation and greater control can make variable-speed technology a worthwhile investment.

But upgrading doesn't always mean buying a completely new pump.

At Aus Pool Supplies, we offer options ranging from external inverter controllers through to complete variable-speed pool pumps.
